Thanks for taking the time to visit my blog.
My name is Laura McLean and I am currently living in Mwanza, Tanzania. I’m 25 years old and I am originally from Toronto, Canada. At the end of May 2017, I moved to Tanzania to volunteer as an Environmental Sustainability Officer with the organization EQWIP HUBs. I finished my placement in May 2018 and returned to Canada.
Leaving hard but it wasn’t as difficult as I think it could have been since I knew I would be returning! In August 2018, I flew from Toronto to Dar Es Salaam to begin my placement with Cuso International in Mwanza, Tanzania. I am working as an Environmental Advisor with T-LED, a partner project between Cuso International and VSO. I will be here again for 1 year!
I originally decided to start a blog to update family and friends back home of what I’m up to and really enjoyed my first year of blogging, so I knew I would have to keep it up. I hope to share more frequently all about my experience working abroad, living in Mwanza, the organization I’m with, the people I meet and any and everything else I can think of! Who am I?
As I mentioned, I’m 25 years old. I graduate in 2016 from the University of Ottawa, where I majored in Environmental studies and minored in French as a second language. I’m really passionate about the environment, sustainability and working to make the world a better place. I really enjoy writing, however I don’t do it often so I’m hoping this blog will really push me to invest more time into it! I struggle with the difference between effect/affect, then/than and other words similar to that, so I don’t think you’ll be seeing those words used too often around here. I’ve watched all the Harry Potter movies and Parks & Recreation tv show too many times to count. I have to resist the urge to pet and cuddle every animal I see and as a pass time, I really love to cook and bake for other people.

Timeline (2nd Time in Tanzania)
March 9, 2018 – Found out I would be returning to Tanzania to volunteer with another NGO as an environmental advisor!
May 8, 2018 – Returned from Zanzibar and waited patiently to go back to a country I truly fell in love with.
August 10, 2018 – Hopped on a plane in Toronto. Travelled to Amsterdam – Kilimanjaro – Dar Es Salaam.
August 16, 2018 – Flew from Dar Es Salaam to Mwanza.
August 17, 2018 – First day of work! (although not much work was done.
